I got to have my own moment feeling a little like a celebrity while working the booth for my state organization, Texas Foreign Language Association, when a bright blue-eyed lady with a beautiful smile approached our table to check out what a fellow state organization was doing to promote itself. We had only begun chatting when she looked at my name tag and asked, "Are you the Amy Lenord that blogs?" So, I said, "Yes I am!" She then told me she was Karen Tharrington, that she teaches Methods at North Carolina State University and that her students read my blog for homework... and then our mutual squealing began! Imagine that! Someone reads my blog for HOMEWORK! We were both so excited to meet each other that we had to jump on the bandwagon and take a #ACTFLselfie, too!
As Karen and I got to talking she shared with me how she has been inspired by #Langchat and how she continuously encourages her pre-service teachers to get involved in the conversations we have. She went on to say that most of them just lurk because they feel that not being teachers yet prevents them from having valuable things to say to teachers who are already in the trenches. Well, I just couldn't accept that, and that very hesitation gave me a BRILLIANT idea! I told Karrie, "What if you have your students send their questions to me and I can blog about them! We could get lots of teachers to comment and share their wisdom! It could be awesome!" Well, she held up to her side of the bargain. She sent me her students questions and even a pic. Just look at these faces? How could you not want to respond to these cutie pies:
