Drop In Modules are designed on Google Slides to give teachers lots of flexibility regarding how they use them. The content students will interact with will always be on the slide itself. The slide parameters are set to 11x8.5 so they can easily be printed and copied for the traditional classroom setting. The teacher's guide or colored text boxes you see are situated outside of the slide itself, so when you print or use the slideshow in presenter's mode, they cannot be seen. Also, the presenter's note section is used for any additional information or resources that might be necessary to support the lesson you design with a Drop In Module, so don't forget to check there. Ultimately, I am designing Drop In Modules with the same care I would my own lesson plans so that teachers of all backgrounds and at any phase of the proficiency journey can benefit from seeing beyond what might look like a traditional worksheet.
One of my strengths is designing discovery vocabulary and grammar lessons that move language instruction away from explicit grammar instruction. That being said, Drop In Modules are about using structures to communicate. They are not:
- Cultural lessons
- Story based
- Primary input
- Unit themes in and of themselves
- Launching points for explicit grammar lessons
Well, that's what a Drop In Module is. I will be posting more of them here and categorizing them so they are grouped in a variety of ways. I hope that makes for easy navigation.
I invite you to take a hard look at this first one to offer suggestions. I promise, I AM LISTENING. I also invite you to send me suggestions for language functions or vital language forms that you want embedded into a context like this. I look forward to hearing what you have to say!

What is Practical Proficiency?
This is not your normal, everyday blog.
Practical Proficiency will serve as my place to share resources that I categorize by purpose, theme, language function, structure and more.
All the resources shared here will be designed with research in mind to support target language teaching.
